THE INDOOR DRIVE-IN
Relive the old days (well, nights) of the drive-in theatre. Even if you're too young to remember piling into the car with mum and dad in your pyjamas to see the latest double feature, you may very well have been the product of a steamy-windowed night at one.
We're bringing the drive-in experience to the middle of the city. Seating will be inside 7 Smart fortwo cars, kindly provided by smart Centre Melbourne, within the No-Vacancy gallery at QV. Grab your popcorn and settle in to a contemporary, urban drive-in experience (sorry, no back seats in the smart car!).
HISTORY
In 1954, the drive-in first came to Melbourne (The Skyline in Burwood), one of the first of 330 drive-ins that were built across Australia. There are now only 3 left in Melbourne; in the outer suburbs of Coburg, Dandenong and Dromana. (Sourced: Drive in Downunder)
Going to the drive-in was a completely different experience from the cinema. There was a collective experience where kids would play together during intermission and people would honk their horns and flash their lights in reaction to what was happening up on the big screen yet a comfortable intimacy from being in your own private space.
We're recreating that experience but bringing it into the city, indoors and even more intimate because there will be only 7 cars per screening. And don’t worry, smart cars are like the Tardis (sorry, no Doctor Who screenings); somehow bigger on the inside than out - there's not much chance of sneaking in anyone in the boot like the old days though. There will also be a limited number of beanbags from which to enjoy the films for those who miss out on the cars.
